April 2010 - Pet Doctors uses social media to grow

A multitude of consultants and other public relations professionals are advising businesses that they can’t afford to be left behind in a world that is rapidly embracing social media.

But, jumping in simply for the sake of jumping may not be a well-advised plan, says Nik and Justin Severidt.

The two brothers say it takes time to see returns from time invested in mediums such as blogging, Facebook and Twitter. February 2010 - Your Pet's Dental Hygiene

Most Pet Owners are so smitten with their furry friend that they deal with their pet's less than minty fresh breath, but ignoring a pet's dental health can lead to serious and costly problems.

"An animal's teeth can be a big mirror into their overall health" says Dr. Dean Severidt of Pet Doctors of America. "Bad breath and swollen gums can be signs of more serious health issues. It's absolutely vital that pet owners don't ignore the annual professional dental cleaning for their animals, even though times are tough right now. Cutting back on this could lead to more serious, and costly problems down the road."  Read the entire article.  Source: www.firstcoastnews.com

October 2009 - Pets, like their masters, are living longer

Pets are living longer than in the previous generation, said Amy Stone, clinical assistant professor of small animal clinical sciences at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Many more are living indoors, without having to contend with wildlife and cars, she said. Now, veterinarians are seeing more old-age issues such as cancer, kidney failure, severe dental disease, even senility and geriatric physical therapy.“

Ten years ago I never saw 20-year-old cats,” said Dean Severidt, a veterinarian and Founder of Pet Doctors of America, which has clinics in Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach. Better food and preventative care such as vaccines, heartworm prevention and flea treatment have led to healthier, longer-lived pets, he said.

Although senior pets do require special care, Severidt said the hardest vet duties can actually come when owners have trouble letting go. As with humans, end-of-life care has grown as an important issue for pets — length versus quality of life. “Animals are becoming a very important part of the family,” Severidt said. “I’ve seen people spend thousands of dollars on chemotherapy to extend a pet’s life six months.”

Severidt reassures owners with some empathy — his own Schnauzer, Odie, lived to age 19.

He attributed long life span to his daughter’s “babying” of the dog, who did well until the very end. “Odie had very little stress in his life,” Severidt said. Read the entire article. Source: www.jacksonville.com
